Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus opened His disciples' “understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry you in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high. And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse fifty-three of his book Luke shared how the disciples of Jesus, “were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God” where we read:
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
The verse reads, “And were continually in the temple, ...” Luke began with the words, “and were continually” or “and were constantly and always” “in the temple” which means “within the sacred worship place located in Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples and the people with them were “always” in the sacred worship place located in Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “... praising and blessing God. Amen.” Luke added the word, “praising” which means “extolling and singing praises in honor to God” “and blessing” or “and celebrating with praises, invoking blessings and consecrating with solemn prayers” “God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how the disciples of Jesus and the people with them were constantly in the “temple” giving “praise, blessings and solemn prayers” to “God”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples obeyed His directive to continue in Jerusalem, and they did so by going to the temple in Jerusalem. While in the temple, they “praised, honored, revered and invoked blessings” upon God. They knew God would pour out His “promise” upon them whenever He desired, and they were to “tarry”. God desires to bless every person who will surrender their life to His Son Jesus, and because Jesus died, was buried and rose from the grave, everyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Lord and Savior” will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words carefully consider the actions of Jesus' disciples and follow their lead.
Next time we begin a new study in the gospel according to John, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
