Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus opened His disciples' “understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you:but tarry you in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high. And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse fifty-two of his book Luke shared how the disciples of Jesus, “worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem” where we read:
And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
The verse reads, “And they worshiped him, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they” or “and Jesus' eleven disciples and their companions” “worshiped him” which means “showed homage and made obeisance to Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus' “eleven disciples and the people with them” began to give “homage” and “obeisance” to Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:” Luke continues with the words, “and returned to Jerusalem” which means “and turned back and came again to Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine” “with great joy” or “”. Luke shared how Jesus' “eleven disciples and the people with them” went back to “Jerusalem” with great gladness even as Jesus had instructed them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the response of Jesus' “eleven disciples and their companions” as Jesus was “carried up to Heaven”. They all began to “worship” Him and give Him the honor and glory He deserves and obeyed Jesus by going back to “Jerusalem”. “Jerusalem” was the place where Jesus was crucified, and whereas the disciples were “afraid” when Jesus was arrested, they were to wait in “Jerusalem” until Jesus sent them the “promise from God on High” who would give them the ability and strength to share His “gospel”. God wants people to “worship” His Son Jesus, and all who do will enjoy a personal relationship with God. Let all who read these words learn the example of the “eleven disciples and their companions” and worship Jesus by obeying His direction for their lives.
Next time Luke shares how the disciples of Jesus, “were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
