After writing about Jesus being in the beginning with God and was God, creating the world and being the light that shines in darkness, John the apostle wrote, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe”, and in chapter one and verse eight of his book, John shared how this John, “was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light” where we read:
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
The verse reads, “He was not that Light, ...” John began with the words, “He was not” or “John the Baptist was in no way” “that light” which means “the truth, knowledge and spiritual purity associated with it”. John shared how John the Baptist was in no way the “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” of God.
The verse continues, “... but was sent to bear witness of that Light.” John added the words, “but was sent” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover was dispatched, dismissed and assigned” “to bear witness” or “to affirm, give, utter an honorable testimony and good report” “of that Light” which means “belonging to the truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” of God. John shared how
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how John the apostle wanted to be certain his readers knew “John the Baptist” was not the One who held “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity”, however, his role was to “testify” of Jesus who was the “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” of God. John the Baptist was sent as the “forerunner” to the Messiah, Christ Jesus, and his responsibility was promote Jesus to the world. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who submit their lives to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God in Heaven.
Next time John shares how Jesus, “was the true Light, which lights every man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
