John the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “Say not you, There are yet four months, and then comes harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit unto life eternal: that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One sows, and another reaps. I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labor: other men labored, and you are entered into their labors. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days”, and in chapter four and verse forty-one of his book, John shared how, “many more believed because of his own word” where we read:
And many more believed because of his own word;
The verse reads, “And many more believed ...”. John began with the words, “and many more” or “and a large and great number of additional Samaritans” “believed” which means “were persuaded, thought to be true and placed confidence in Jesus”. John shared how a great number more of the “Samaritans” trusted in Jesus.
The verse continues, “... because of his own word;” John added the word, “because of” which means “since and on account of” “his own word” or “Jesus' personal speech, utterance, declaration, dictum, maxim and discourse”. John shared how the greater number of people in Samaria “trusted and had confidence” in Jesus because He gave His own personal witness to them.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn about more people within the city located in Samaria believing in Jesus because He spoke to them. Jesus bore witness of the Kingdom of God, and His purpose was to reach anyone who will believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”. God loves people, and when they yield their lives to Him, they will receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God.
Next time John shares how Jesus “said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of your saying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
