Many Samaritans Believe in Jesus - John 4:39

John the apostle wrote how Jesus said, “Say not you, There are yet four months, and then comes harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit unto life eternal: that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One sows, and another reaps. I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labor: other men labored, and you are entered into their labors”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-nine of his book, John shared how, “many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him” where we read:

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman,

which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

The verse reads,And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, ...” John began with the words, “And many of the Samaritans” or “and a lot and great number of the people from the region of Samaria” “of that city” which means “belonging to the dwelling place, abode and habitation from where the woman came” “believed on him” or “had confidence, trusts in and were persuaded by Jesus” “for the saying” which means “because, since and on account of the uttering, declaring and proclaiming” “of the woman” or “pertaining to the female human from Samaria”. John shared how a great number of the people from the “habitation” in “Samaria” trusted in Jesus because of what the woman at the well told them about Him.

The verse continues ... which testified, He told me all that ever I did. John added the words, “which testified” which means “who bore witness, affirmed and gave a good report”, “He told me all” or “He, Jesus, spoke, brought word and declared everything” “that ever I did” which means “that I, the woman from Samaria, ever performed, produced or made read”. John shared how the “woman at the well's” witness and testimony of Jesus was the agent of conversion and belief for the people in the “Samaritan” city.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how it was the “witness” of the “woman at the well” that persuaded people within the city in Samaria to believe and trust in Jesus. A person who yields their life to Jesus becomes an example to others of Him, and they are affected by their testimony. God wants every person to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will believe and trust in Him and tell everyone about their experience with Him.

Next time John shares how the Samaritans, “besought him that he would tarry with them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
