In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “there is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceeds from the ruler”, and in chapter ten and verse six of his book Solomon said, “folly is set in great dignity” where we read,
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
The verse reads, “Folly is set in great dignity, …” Solomon began with the words, “folly is set” or “foolishness and silliness is put, bestowed, ascribed, consecrated and dedicated” “in great dignity” which means “within abounding and exceeding loftiness and elevation”. Solomon said the “error which proceeds from the ruler” is when they consecrate foolish people in lofty positions.
The verse continues, “… and the rich sit in low place.” Solomon added the words, “and the rich” or “and the people of wealth or worth” “sit in low place” which means “are seated, remain and abide in a humble rank and low condition”. Solomon said the “error which proceeds from the ruler” also set people of wealth or worth in low conditions and places of humility.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the “error” of the “ruler” in our previous verse was that he put foolish people in lofty positions, and he placed people of wealth and worth in low conditions. When authority and position are given to people who act in foolish ways, there is great destruction, and when people who are of proven worth are put in positions that are lowly, there is a waste of their gifts and talents. God knows we “all have sinned and come short of his glory”, (See Romans 3:23) and yet He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead after three days. When we receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us His wisdom so we are never like this foolish ruler who elevates those who are foolish and puts down those who have proven worth.
Next time Solomon says, “I have seen servants upon horses”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
