Death and Life in the Tongue - Proverbs 18:21

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty-one of Proverbs Solomon said, “death and life are in the power of the tongue” where we read,

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

The verse begins, Death and life are in the power of the tongue:Solomon began with the words, “death and life” or “pestilence, ruin, dying and fresh, active and lively living” “are in the power” which means “exist within the strength, portion and stroke” “of the tongue” or “pertaining to the wedge in the mouth used for speaking”. Solomon shared how pestilence, ruin and active living exist within the strength and influence of the “tongue” used for speaking.

The verse continues, “and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Solomon added the words, “and they that love it” or “and the people whether male or female who have an appetite and passion for the power of the tongue” “shall eat the fruit thereof” which means “will consume, devour and reap the bough, reward and compensation within the tongue”. Solomon said people who are affectionately fond of the “power of the tongue” will consume the reward and compensation within it.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how words are powerful when we speak them. When we use our speech for good, they bring strength and encouragement to those to whom we speak, and if we use our words to curse, we can bring ruin and depression to people. God wants us to use our voices according to His ways, and He gave us His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins to forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and to help us to use our words to edify others and not tear them down.

Next time Solomon says, “whoso finds a wife finds a good thing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
