In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “While the king sits at his table, my spikenard sends forth the smell thereof”, and in chapter one and verse thirteen of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “a bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me” where we read,
A bundle of myrrh is my well beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
The verse begins, “A bundle of myrrh is my well beloved unto me;” Solomon began with the words, “a bundle of myrrh” or “a parcel, pouch or bag of an Arabian gum from the bark of a tree used in sacred oil and in perfume” “is my well beloved unto me” which means “exists my, the bride's, loved on to me, the bride”. Solomon shared how the bride said her greatly loved one was similar to a pouch or bag of the sacred oil or perfume known as “myrrh”.
The verse goes on to say, “he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.” Solomon continued with the words, “he shall lie all night” or “he, the groom, will lodge, stop over, abide and pass the entire nighttime” “betwixt my breasts” which means “between and in the midst of my, the bride's, bosom”. Solomon shared how the bride declared that the groom would pass the entire nighttime in the midst of her bosom.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the bride considered her greatly loved groom to be similar to the odoriferous scent of “myrrh” perfume, and she felt so close to him that she trusted that he would lie in her bosom all night long. It is interesting to note that Jesus was presented with gold, frankincense and “myrrh” as a child (See Matthew 2:11), and when he was being crucified they gave him “wine mingled with myrrh” (See Mark 15:23). At the time Jesus was to be buried, “myrrh” was brought to his body for embalming. (See John 19:39) God desires an intimate personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we humble ourselves, repent of our sins and put our faith and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow His “scent of myrrh” draw us close to Him into the nighttime and for all our lives.
Next time Solomon says, “my beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
