Truth stands on its own. Whether a person believes the truth or not doesn't affect the truth in any manner. Pilate who was the presiding governor over the decision of whether Jesus should be set free or be crucified asked Jesus, “What is truth?” Today, Pilate knows, and although he tried to wash his hands in an act of innocence saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just person: you see to it,”when it came to his decision, he was not innocent. Today John the apostle once again clarifies the difference between people who believe the truth of God's witness and those who make him “a liar”. We read in the book of First John in chapter five and verse ten:
He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself: he that believes not God has made him a liar; because he believes not the record that God gave of his Son.
From the beginning of this five chapter book John has been sharing with us how God desires to have fellowship with people. John has told us over and over again how much God loves us, and how He provided His Son Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins to make a way for us to have a relationship with Him. We have been told of late that God Himself has born witness of His Son Jesus during Jesus' baptism and during the Mount of Transfiguration. In other words, over and over and over again, God Almighty through His servant child John the apostle has told us how much He loves us. For those of us who believe in Jesus, the Son of God, we know we have His witness within us.
However, there are those who do not believe God. They refuse to believe the truth. In fact, many of them will argue that there is “other truth”, and that this is only one belief. There contention is that there are many beliefs, and all beliefs are equal and valid. John the apostle makes this very clear - “he that believes not God has made him a liar”, and why - “because he believes not the record that God gave of his Son.” God's record of His Son is that we should hear Him. God's record of His Son is that it was in His Son that he was “well pleased.”
God witnessed His Son pleading in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus asked, “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not my will but your will be done.” There was no other way. God witnessed people arresting, slapping, and beating His son, and then mocking Him, falsely accusing Him, and crowning Him with a crown of thorns. There was no other way. God witnessed Jesus crying out from the cross, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” There was no other way. God watched His Son take on the sins of all humanity, and God watched His Son die for the sins of others and not Himself. There was no other way.
If we were made to endure any of these things done to someone we love there is no telling how we would be, and yet, God allowed it. God's witness of Jesus, His Son, was that His Son became the sacrifice for us to have fellowship with God. Now, if any do not believe this incredible offering of relationship, they make God a liar, and they forfeit the greatest relationship that man shall ever know.
Next time we shall see what John the apostle has to say about the benefit to having a relationship with God, so read ahead, and we will join together then.
Until tomorrow...there is more...
