Mordecai's Letter Esther 9:20 - Equipped for Battle

The days of feasting and celebration were enjoyed by the Jews after their victory over their enemies who were scattered all over the Persian empire. Though their foes thought they would rid themselves of the Jews, the tables were turned upon them and the enemies became the slaughtered. The thirteenth and fourteenth days of Adar were noted to be days of rest, feasting and gladness, and in chapter nine and verse twenty we see Mordecai writing a letter to all the Jews about them. We read:

And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,

The verse begins, “And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews...” When Mordecai assessed the total victory enjoyed by the Jews, he knew there needed to be a special day of recognition established for the same. He “wrote these things” which would solidify the historical event that just occurred. Rather than being an event that would disappear from their minds after a few years, Mordecai's desire was to insure these things were recorded. He sent letters “unto all the Jews...” so that none of them would forget these great and mighty things that were done.

The verse continues, “...that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,”. Mordecai's desire was to reach Jewish people no matter where they dwelt in the provinces of the Persian empire, and it is noted that distance was no obstacle for sending this important message. Not only would this wonderful triumph be recorded in history, it was just as important that Jews everywhere receive the letters about it.

Writing down times when God has intervened in our lives is a wonderful trait. Too often we are prone to forget when God helped us to triumph over situations and circumstances that were difficult in our lives. Not only does recording these events help us to remember, but they also help us continue our faith in God for the future. Since the Lord Jesus has been involved in our past, He will be there in our future as well. Perhaps we should have celebration days for certain events on our calendars so that we will be reminded as Paul the apostle said in the book of Philippians in chapter one and verse six:

that he which has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Next time we will see the purpose for Mordecai's letter, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow...there is more...
