Remember the Law of Moses Malachi 4:4

In the final words of Malachi the prophet, “the LORD of hosts” has commended those who “feared” Him, and He has promised to provide them with healing, prosperity and conquering over the wicked. In chapter four and verse four we see the Lord exhorting these faithful few to remember Moses' law where we read:

Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

The verse begins, “Remember the law of Moses my servant,” The word “Remember” means “recall or call to mind” which implies that what is about to be mentioned has been put there before. The Lord exhorts them to recall “the law of Moses my servant” which was the “direction, instruction, prophetic teaching, and legal directives” given by Moses who was God's chosen law giver and deemed as a “servant” or “slave” of the Lord. Most of the law may be found in the Old Testament books named Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

The verse continues, “ which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.” Let us notice that the Lord “commanded unto him” which means “charged, laid order or commissioned” to Moses this law “in Horeb” which means “desert” and was another name for Mount Sinai. This law was “for all Israel”, and it included “the statutes” or “degree, portion, limits or boundaries” and “judgments” which refers to the “litigation, procedure, rectitude or legal execution” of the law. Those who “feared the Lord” were to remember the law of Moses and everything that was included within it.

As we think about these words, we might be exhorted ourselves to “Remember the law of Moses”. Although some of the civil and cultural laws differ than our time, the moral law of Moses continues. The Ten Commandments are found in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy, and are included in the New Testament in various forms. Wherever we discover the law we should keep in mind that boundaries and limits are there because God loves us and desires for us prosperity and protection. The God-fearing children of Israel were exhorted to remember the law, and if they were reminded, how much more should we be. May the Lord help us to remember His loving law given by Moses.

Next time the Lord will foretell the coming of Elijah, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
