Micah the prophet shared
concerning “the remnant of Jacob”, and he likened them to
“dew from the LORD” and “showers upon the grass”.
He said they would be “in the midst of many people as a lion
among the beasts of the forest” and “as a young lion among
the flocks of sheep”. In other words, they would be a nation
who would have influence over and conquer many nations surrounding
them. In chapter five and verse thirteen, Micah tells how all of this
remnant's “enemies shall be cut off” where we read:
Your hand shall be
lifted up upon your adversaries, and all your enemies shall be cut
off.
The
verse begins, “Your hand shall be lifted up upon your
adversaries,” Micah uses the
phrase, “your hand”
which refers to the “power and might” “shall be
lifted up” or “be exalted
and set on high” “upon your adversaries”
which refers to “foes, enemies and oppressors”. Not only would
this “remnant”
have influence over “many nations”,
but those who were their foes would fall under their power.
The verse continues, “and
all your enemies shall be cut off.” Not
only would these foes fall under the “remnant's”
mighty hand, but also, “and all your enemies”
which were “both personal and national” “shall be cut
off” or “cut down, killed,
eliminated and severed like a body part”. If we use our
imaginations with this phrase, there is a gruesome fate that awaits
the “enemies” of
“the remnant” of
Israel.
As
we think through this prophesy of Micah, we realize that those who
opposed Israel were not just people with a little dislike of them.
They intended to destroy Israel, and when this “remnant”
appears, it will be quite the
same. The daunting part about this prophesy is that the LORD is
promising through the prophet Micah that these things shall be so. In
fact, Micah uses the phrase “shall be”
twice in this same verse. May Micah's words help us to align
ourselves with God's chosen people Israel, and may we never fall
under the power of it's mighty “hand”
or be “cut off” as
those who are in opposition to them.
Next
time Micah writes concerning horses and chariots,
so read ahead, and
we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
