As Peter
the apostle continued to give direction to the “wives” who
were among the “scattered” Christians, he told them their
“manner of living” would be observed by their husbands, and they
would win them to Jesus Christ by it. In chapter three and verse six
of his letter, Peter continued his instructions to the wives by
sharing how “Sara obeyed Abraham” where we read:
Even as Sara obeyed
Abraham, calling him lord:
whose daughters you
are, as long as you do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
The
verse begins, “Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him
lord:” Peter began with the
words, “Even as”
which means “like” “Sara”
whose name means “princess” and was “the wife of Abraham”
“obeyed” or
“listened to or harkened to” “Abraham” which
means “father of a multitude” and was “the son of Terah
and the founder of the Jewish nation”,
“calling him” or
“to call or utter in a loud voice” “lord”
which means “master, sir or he to whom a person or thing belongs,
about which he has power of deciding and master”. Peter had shared
concerning “women of old time”,
and now he specifically mentions “Sara” as
an example of the way “wives”
should be toward their “husbands”.
The verse goes on to say, “whose
daughters you are, as long as you do well, and are not afraid with
any amazement.” Peter went on
to say, “whose daughters you are”
which refers to “offspring or children”, “as long as
you do well” which means “to
do good or do something which profits others”, “and are
not afraid” which in Greek is
“phobeō mē phobeō”or
“not fearing or reverent” “with any amazement”
which means “not one bit of terror or fear”. In other words, “as
long as” the “wives” did
good things for their husbands without fear, they would be mimicking
the behavior of Sara.
When
we think through Peter's words, perhaps we would benefit from looking
back at Sara's behavior with her husband. Even though Abraham asked
her twice to say she was his sister when he believed his life was in
danger, she complied. The interesting part of this story is how the
Lord preserved Sara even when she was in a compromised situation.
Sara blessed her husband Abraham, and the Lord blessed her. The
assurance in this verse is how the Lord Jesus will be blessed by the
wives who obey according to Sara's example, and though this may not
be popular today, God's word will never return void. May all who have
ears hear and take heed to Peter's words.
Next
time Peter begins to share with the “husbands”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
