As Paul
completed his instructions to the “servants” and “masters”
within the church of Ephesus, he once again turned his attention
toward the entire church. In chapter six and verse ten of his letter,
Paul exhorted the “brethren” to “be strong in the
Lord” where we read:
Finally,
my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
The
verse begins, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord,...”
Paul began with the word, “Finally” which means “the
rest or remaining, hereafter, for the future, henceforth, at last,
besides and moreover” “my brethren” which refers to the
Christian believers within the church of Ephesus, “be strong”
or “be endued with strength, bold, and headstrong” “in the
Lord” who is “the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of
God”. The Christians within the Ephesian church were to rely upon
the Lord Jesus Christ for their “strength” and be “bold”
with it.
The
verse continues, “... and in the power of his might.”
Paul added, “and in the power” which means “force,
might and dominion” “of his might” which refers to “the
Lord's ability, force and strength”. Paul desired for the Ephesians
to rely upon “God's” “force and ability” for their primary
source of “strength” rather than themselves or any other
alternative.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we should be inspired to put
our confidence in “God's” “strength” rather than our
own. Many people rely upon themselves, other people, circumstances
and situations for their “might”, and these fall short at
some time or in some manner. When we put our trust in God, nothing
that comes against us can stand. May the Lord Jesus inspire and help
us to put our confidence in “God's strength” rather than
the other sources that are available to us.
Next
time Paul tells the Ephesian church members to “put on
the whole armor of God”, so
read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
