The Light is Sweet - Ecclesiastes 11:7

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hand. For you know not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good”, and in chapter eleven and verse seven of his book Solomon said, “truly the light is sweet” where we read,

Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.

The verse reads, “Truly the light is sweet, …” Solomon began with the words, “truly the light” or “indeed clarity, brightness and illumination” “is sweet” which means “exists as pleasant, agreeable and excellent”. Solomon said indeed illumination exists and excellent and agreeable.

The verse goes on to say, “… and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.” Solomon continued with the words, “and a pleasant thing it is” or “and a good, agreeable, excellent and valuable act exists” “for the eyes” which means “on behalf of the physical eyes used for vision and sight” “to behold the sun” or “to look upon, perceive and consider the sun in the sky”. Solomon said it is a good for the physical eyes used for sight to look upon and consider the sun in the sky.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how insight and illumination is pleasant similar to the way the physical eyes are employed to look upon and consider the sun in the sky. God wants us to live with “light and illumination”, and because the sun in the sky gives both of these, Solomon employed them to teach his readers this principle. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (See John 8:12), and when we put our faith and trust in Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will make us “the light of the world” as well. (See Matthew 5:14)

Next time Solomon shares what happens, “if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
