While suffering through his
lament over Jerusalem, Jeremiah was very descriptive about his
emotional and mental condition. However, he took great comfort and
hope in the fact that the Lord's mercies and compassions do not fail,
and he resolved that these were new and available for him every
morning. In chapter three and verse twenty-four Jeremiah tells where
his fortune lie and the result of knowing the LORD was his portion.
He wrote:
The verse begins, “The LORD is my portion, says
my soul;” Jeremiah states that “The LORD” or
“Yahweh, Jehovah” is his “portion” which means his
“share, possession, parcel, part or award”. Jeremiah doesn't see
the tangible items of the world as his reward. He looks upon the LORD
as his treasure. Notice that this idea is deep within Jeremiah, “says
my soul”, and that he is recognizing this in the midst of his
difficulties.
The
verse continues, “therefore will I hope in him.” Because
Jeremiah realized that “The LORD” was his “portion”,
he could make the conclusion that he could put his hope in Him.
Jeremiah did not rely upon gold, riches or restatement of position or
place, but he resolved to put his “hope” or his “waiting,
expecting or tarrying” in the LORD. Adversity surrounded Jeremiah,
but he would place his trust and hope in nothing less than the fact
that the LORD'S mercies and compassions were available each day, and
because they were, the LORD was his portion.
If we
have never been inspired by the word of God, we should be in this
verse. By turning his attention to the LORD, Jeremiah altered his
outlook upon his situation. Rather than looking at the circumstances
and relying upon the world to be his resource, Jeremiah resolved
within his soul that the LORD was his portion, and therefore he had
hope. Perhaps as we meditate upon this verse we too will be inspired
as the old hymn so beautifully said:
Turn
your eyes upon Jesus
Look
full in His wonderful face
And
the things of Earth will grow strangely dim
In the
light of His glory and grace.
May the
Lord Jesus grant us the grace to fully realize that our portion lies
in Him, and we can trust that He will take care of us even in the
midst of the greatest troubles.
Next
time we see what the Lord does for those who wait, so read ahead, and
we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow...there is more...
