Wait For and Seek the Lord Lamentations 3:25

We have learned thus far in the book of Lamentations that Jeremiah has been very open with the way he and those within the city felt after the devastation occurred because they fell away from the Lord. We have also learned that Jeremiah's hope lie in the fact that the LORD's mercies and compassions were new and available to him every morning, and because the LORD was his portion, he could have future hope. But what happens when it seems the LORD has delayed? In chapter three and verse twenty-five Jeremiah answers that question where he wrote:

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

The verse begins, “The LORD is good unto them that wait for him,...” Three things stand out within this portion of the verse. First, it is “The LORD” who is the one depended upon as the agent for good. Second, Jeremiah states that “The LORD is good unto them” which means “pleasant, excellent and agreeable” to those of whom he speaks. And finally, Jeremiah tells to whom the LORD will be good, “them that wait for him” or those who “look for, hope and expect” for the LORD to perform that which He has promised.

The verse goes on to say, “...to the soul that seeks him.” Jeremiah continues his encouraging words with a more specific person to whom the LORD will do good, “the soul” or “living being” who “seeks” which means “resorts to, seeks with care, and inquires” of the LORD. This person is engaged in the search and diligently pursues and follows after the LORD and His ways.

As we think about this verse, we might be inclined to ask, “Do we really “wait” for the LORD? Do our souls “seek” Him? Are we driven within, particularly in the difficult times, to “look for, hope and expect” that He will do us good? Do we “resort to, seek with care, and inquire” of Him as we experience circumstances that seem to be contrary to His promises? Maybe our resolve should be to first examine ourselves to determine how we align with these two traits, and then learn to “wait for” and “seek” the LORD with all our hearts because the promise to us is that He “is good” to those who have acquired them.

Next time we see two special things that a man should do, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
