After sharing
the date, the twenty-fourth day of “the
ninth month,
in the second year of Darius”, when the
LORD spoke to Haggai concerning Israel again, in chapter two and
verse eleven of his prophesy, the LORD tells Haggai to “ask
now the priests” about “the
law” where we read:
The
verse begins, “Thus says the LORD of hosts;” Haggai began
with the phrase, “Thus says” or “utters, speaks or avows”
“the LORD” which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah” who is “the
existing One” and “the proper name of the one true God” “of
hosts” which refers to “that which goes forth to war as an
army or warfare”. The LORD once again is the author of this new
directive given by Haggai to the children of Israel.
The verse continues, “Ask now
the priests concerning
the law, saying,” Haggai added, “Ask”
or “inquire, borrow, beg or consult” “now
the priests” who were “principal or chief
officers” “concerning the law” which
refers to the “direction, instruction and body of legal directives”
“saying” or
“uttering, speaking or avowing”. Haggai's commission from the
LORD was to direct his question to the “priests”
or spiritual leadership within Israel.
When
we meditate upon the LORD's words through Haggai, we should have our
hearts prepared for what He is about to ask. The “priests”
or “spiritual leaders” of Israel knew “the law” and were
going to be questioned by the LORD, and if we put ourselves in their
place, we can only imagine what it would be like to be “questioned”
by the LORD. Jesus Christ has given all who believe in Him and His
sacrifice for their sins upon the cross to have access to God, and if
we think about standing before Him, being ready for Him to speak, and
listening for Him to “ask” us something about “His law”,
we will get a sense of what it must have been like when Haggai
prepared to share the LORD's question with them.
Next
time the LORD tells Haggai to “ask the priests”
concerning “holy”
things, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
