Desire the Sincere Milk of the Word 1 Peter 2:2

Because of the “enduring word of the Lord”, Peter the apostle told the “scattered” Christians they were to lay “aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings”. In chapter two and verse two of his letter to them, Peter told the Christians to “desire the sincere milk of the word” where we read:

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby:

The verse begins, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,...” Peter began with the words, “As newborn” which literally is “just born” and figuratively means “a new convert” “babes” which refers to “a child, infant or young child”, “desire” or “longing for, to pursue with love, to long after and lust” “the sincere” which means “guileless, unmixed, unadulterated, pure and without dishonest intent” “milk” which literally means “milk” and is a metaphor for “less difficult Christian truths” “of the word” which refers to “pertaining to speech, speaking, reason and logic both spiritual and pertaining to the soul”. These Christians who were “scattered” were to “long deeply for” the unadulterated and pure less difficult parts of the scriptures.

The verse goes on to say, “...that you may grow thereby:” Peter added the reason they were to “desire the sincere milk of the word” as he wrote, “that you may grow” or “increase, grow up, augment and become greater” “thereby” which means “in, by and with it”. When the “scattered” Christians applied the “sincere milk of the word”, they were bound to “increase and grow up” in their relationship with the Lord.

When we meditate upon Peter's words, we should be inspired to “desire the sincere milk of the word” ourselves. The basic principles in the Bible are important to our Christian walk with Jesus. We should be reading and studying the scriptures daily to receive the primary and fundamental ways to act and live. We are to “grow” as Christians, and the basics of Christianity are found in the word of God. May Jesus by His Holy Spirit bless us with the “desire” to enjoy His word.

Next time Peter shares a condition for desiring “the sincere milk of the word”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
