Joel the
prophet declared when the invading “nation” would come,
“before their face the people shall be much pained” and
“all faces shall gather blackness.” According
to Joel in chapter two and verse seven of his prophecy, devastation
was to occur throughout Judah but the enemy would “run
like mighty men, climb the wall like men of war, and march every one
on his ways” where we read:
They shall
run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war;
and they
shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their
ranks:
The
verse begins, “They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb
the wall like men of war;” Joel began with the phrase, “they
shall run” which means “run swiftly, dart, move in a quick
hurry” “like mighty men” or “strong and brave men”;
“they shall climb” which means “go up, ascend, spring
and shoot forth” “the wall” or “the wall of protection
in a town” “like men” which refers to “individuals and
mankind” “of war” or “battle and warfare”. The
opposition shall be “strong” and agile as they penetrate the
defenses of the land of Judah.
The
verse goes on to say, “and they shall march every one on his
ways, and they shall not break their ranks:” Joel added, “and
they shall march” which means “walk, come, proceed, move,
carry and lead away” “every one” or “each man or male,
whether husband or servant” “on his ways” which refers
to “the roads, distances, journeys, paths and manners”, “and
they shall not break” or “take or give a pledge, lend, borrow
or fetch” “their ranks” which means “way, path, road
and passing of life as a traveler”. In other words, Joel knew this
army was to be unified in their effort to destroy Judah, and none of
them would vary or be bought off in their mission.
When
we think through these words of Joel, we begin to understand the
resolve this nation had against Judah. Their desire was to totally
destroy the land and it's people, and they would have the strength,
agility, unity and loyalty to accomplish their mission. The enemy of
our soul, satan, has the same resolve. He desires to destroy us, and
his minions are unified in the effort. We must cling closely to the
principles of God through Jesus Christ His Son by the help of the
Holy Spirit if we are ever to survive satan's onslaughts. May the
Lord Jesus through the Spirit remind us, we are in a battle, and the
enemy is strong and able, however, Jesus is more than capable to
defend us from any fierce attack.
Next
time shares about people “falling on a sword” and
“not being wounded”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
