As Joel
continued to describe the “nation” that was to invade
Judah, he shared how they would “run to and fro in the city, run
upon the wall, climb upon the houses and enter in at the windows like
a thief”. In chapter two and verse ten of his prophecy, Joel
described how this invasion affects “the earth, heavens, sun,
moon and the stars” where we read:
They shall run
to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall
climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a
thief.
The earth
shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble:
the sun
and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their
shining:
The
verse begins, “The earth shall quake before them; the
heavens shall tremble:” Joel
began with the words, “The earth”
which refers to “the land, country, territory, district and region”
“shall quake” or
“tremble, rage, quiver, be agitated, excited and perturbed”
“before them”
which means “in their faces, in front of and in the presence of
them”; “the heavens”
or “sky, universe and atmosphere” “shall tremble”
which means “shake, quake and cause to spring or leap”. The
invasion of this nation would cause even the “earth” and
“heavens” to move and quake out of their normal courses.
The
verse continues, “the sun and the moon shall be dark, and
the stars shall withdraw their shining:” Joel
added, “the sun”
which refers to “the physical sun, sunrise and sunset”
“and the moon” or “the
moon in the night sky” “shall be dark”
or “be darken and blackish”, “and the stars”
which means “the round and shining spheres in the night sky”
“shall withdraw”
or “gather, receive, remove, collect and perish” “their
shining” which means “their
brightness, brilliancy and shining”. Even the “celestial bodies”
in the sky would be affected by this fierce “nation”.
When
we think through these words of Joel, we see more and more examples
of how ferocious this invading army would be. There is no mercy from
their onslaughts, and even the physical surroundings were to be
affected by them. When we consider “satan”, the enemy of our
souls, we should never think for one moment that he cannot cause
great damage upon our world. Fortunately for those who are in a
relationship with the “God”
of the Universe through Jesus Christ, He is the creator of all these
celestial bodies. When we feel the “earth, heavens, sun,
moon and stars” are being
moved and shaken in our lives, may we cling to and rely upon Jesus
Christ who is the Divine maker of them all.
Next
time shares about the “LORD uttering his voice before his
army”, so read ahead, and we
shall join together then.
