The LORD's Voice and Roar Joel 3:16

Joel the prophet shared how the LORD would call, “Multitudes, multitudes” to the “valley of decision”, and the “sun, moon and stars” would be affected by the judgment He would pour out upon the enemy nations of Judah. In chapter three and verse sixteen of his prophesy, Joel told how the LORD will “roar out of Zion” and “utter his voice from Jerusalem” where we read:

The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

The verse begins, “The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem;” Joel began the the words, “The LORD” which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the one true God” “also shall roar” or “rumble, moan or thunder” “out of Zion” which means “parched place” and is “another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books”, “and utter” or “put, set, permit, ascribe, employ, devote, consecrate, dedicate, entrust and yield” “his voice” which means “sound, noise, bleating, crackling and proclamation” “from Jerusalem” which means “teaching of peace” and is “the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. In addition to the “sun, moon and stars” being affected, the LORD would employ His “thunderous” “voice” from the city of “Jerusalem”.

The verse goes on to say, “and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.” Joel added, “and the heavens” or “the visible universe, sky and atmosphere” “and the earth” or “the land, country, territory, district and region” “shall shake” which means “quake and cause to spring or leap”: “but the LORD” which refers to “ Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the one true God” “will be the hope” or “refuge and shelter” “of his people” which refers to “God's nation, compatriots, country-men, kinsman and kindred”, “and the strength” which means “place of safety, protection, refuge, stronghold, fastness and harbor” “of the children” or “sons, grandsons, children and members of a group” “of Israel” which means “God prevails or governed by God” and is “the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. The LORD's “voice” would “shake” the “heavens” above and the “earth” beneath and be the “hope” and “strength” of His people.

When we meditate upon these words of Joel, we may remember the power of the LORD's “voice” to create the entire universe. Is it any wonder that His “voice” would “shake” the “heavens and earth” in this situation? Woe be to those who are opposed to the people of the LORD, and should we be against Him in any manner, let us repent, turn our hearts to His Son Jesus Christ and allow His “voice” to be our “hope and strength” before His “roar” and “voice” is against us.

Next time Joel shares about the “holiness of Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
