As Joel
continued to share how the LORD would “recompense” those
who opposed the nation of Judah, he referred to how they “have
taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my
goodly pleasant things”. In chapter three and verse six of his
prophesy, Joel continued to tell how these enemies had “sold”
the “children of Judah and Jerusalem unto the Grecians”
where we read:
The
children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have you sold
unto the Grecians,
that you
might remove them far from their border.
The
verse begins, “The children also of Judah and the children of
Jerusalem have you sold unto the Grecians,...” Joel began with
the words, “The children” which refers to “the sons,
grandsons and male children” “also of Judah” which means
“praised” and is “the territory occupied by the tribe of Judah”
“and the children” or “the sons, grandsons and male
children” “of Jerusalem” which means “teaching of
peace” and is “the chief city of Palestine and capital of the
united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split” “have
you sold” or “sold or merchandised and surrendered” “unto
the Grecians” which refers to “the Ionians, Jevanites or
descendants of Javan”. These enemies of Judah and Jerusalem
actually took their children and “sold” them to the
“Grecian” nation.
The
verse continues, “...that you might remove them far from
their border.” Joel added, “that you might remove them
far” or “become distant, removed, extended, loosed and put
far away” “from their border” which means “territory,
region, landmark, quarter and space”. The reason for removing the
children was for them to be “separated” from their territory and
region.
When
we consider these words of Joel, we understand why the LORD desired
to “recompense” this opposing nation. Can we even imagine
how we would feel if we were to see our children “sold” to
another “nation” ? The reason most invading nations would
separate children from their parents was to destroy the family unit
which would eventually ruin a culture. Nonetheless, God Almighty, the
LORD, was watching, and He would take revenge upon those who would
divide His people. Those who reject God's Son Jesus have in a sense
“separated” “children” from their God, and woe be to
those who carry them away to foreign lands and false ideologies.
Next
time Joel shares how the LORD will “raise”
these “children out of the place”
where these people “sold them”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
