The Exceeding Riches of His Grace Ephesians 2:7

Paul the apostle continued to share with the Ephesians how God made us “alive” who were “dead in sins”, and “raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”. In chapter two and verse eight of his letter, Paul wrote concerning “the exceeding riches of his grace” where we read:

That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches
of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

The verse begins, “That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches...” Paul began with the words, “That in the ages” or “the unbroken age, perpetuity or period of time” “to come” which means “arrive, be at hand and overtake” “he might show” or “point out, demonstrate, prove, manifest, display or put forth” “the exceeding” which means “surpassing, transcending or excelling” “riches” or “wealth, abundance of external possessions, fullness, plentitude, and that with which one is enriched”. God poured forth his grace so He could demonstrate His “surpassing wealth” in our future.

The verse goes on to say, “...of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” Paul added, “of his grace” which means “that which afford joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness, goodwill, lovingkindness and unmerited favor” “in his kindness” or “moral goodness, integrity and benignity” “toward us” which refers to “Paul and the Ephesians” “through Christ” who is the “anointed One, the Messiah and Son of God” “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”. The “exceeding riches” of God's “grace” will be afforded to us through the “goodness and integrity” through “Jesus”.

When we meditate upon these words of Paul, we begin to see how the richness of God's “grace” is not only for our present situation, but also for our future. God desires a relationship with people, and this is made possible through His “unmerited favor”. We should see ourselves as greatly blessed as God pours out His Spirit of “grace” upon us currently and in our future.

Next time Paul shares how we are “saved by grace through faith”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
