Paul wrote to
the Ephesian church members and reminded them they were as “the
building fitly framed together” that “grows unto an holy
temple in the Lord”. In chapter two and verse twenty-two of his
letter, Paul told the Ephesians they were “an habitation of God
through the Spirit” where we read:
In whom
you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the
Spirit.
The
verse begins, “In whom you also are builded together...” Paul
began with the words, “In whom you also” which refers to
the Ephesian church members being included as well “are builded
together” which means “put together or constructed out of
several things into one whole”. Jesus included the “Gentiles”
as part of His church and in doing so made them a part of His “Holy
temple”.
The
verse continues, “... for an habitation of God through
the Spirit.” Paul added, “for
an habitation” which means “an
abode or dwelling-place” “of God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “through
the Spirit” which refers to
“with and by the third person of the triune God, the Holy
Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son”.
The purpose for the “Holy temple” was to be a “house
for God” wherein He would
dwell and be among His people. This was made possible by Jesus' death
on the cross and by means of His Holy Spirit.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we begin to understand the
importance of the temple of the Lord. God desired to live among His
people, and when Jews or Gentiles receive Jesus Christ as their Lord
and Savior, they become part of His “Holy temple”. We who have
received Jesus Christ, whether Jews or Gentiles, have become His
“habitation” through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Next
time Paul we begin a new chapter and see Paul declare himself “a
prisoner of Jesus Christ”, so
read ahead, and we shall join together then.
