In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah asked “What see you? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof”, and in chapter four and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah asked the angel, “what are these, my lord?” where we read,
So I answered and spoke to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
The verse reads, “So I answered and spoke to the angel that talked with me, saying, ...” Zechariah began with the words, “so I answered and spoke” or “then, therefore, wherefore and on this account I, Zechariah, began to speak, responded and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to the angel” which means “toward the spiritual messenger and envoy” “that talked with me” or “who made declarations, spoke and conversed with me, Zechariah”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Zechariah shared how he questioned the “angel” and asked him the following question.
The verse continues, “... What are these, my lord?” Zechariah added the words, “what are these” or “whatsoever are the two olive trees”, “my lord” which means “my, Zechariah's, master”? Zechariah asked the “angel” whom He considered his master “what” the two olive trees were.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how Zechariah did not know what the “two olive trees” were that were in his vision, so he asked the “angel” whom he considered to be his master what they meant. Zechariah's posture and humility were admirable as he asked the “angel” what were the “two olive trees”. We should take a lesson from Zechariah when we don't understand or perceive what God is showing us. This much we know, God loves us, and He demonstrated His love to us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See Romans 5:8) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be available to ask Him through His Holy Spirit to reveal to us whatsoever He wills whenever we are without understanding. (See Proverbs 3:5-6)
Next time Zechariah shares how the angel asked him, “know you not what these be?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
