Be Not Rash With Your Mouth - Ecclesiastes 5:2

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Keep your foot when you go to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil”, and in chapter five and verse two of his book Solomon said, “be not rash with your mouth”, where we read,

Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter any thing before God:

for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.

The verse reads, Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: Solomon began with the words, “be not rash” or “do not be hurried, alarmed, disturbed and anxious” “with your mouth” which means “by the use of your, the people reading Solomon’s word’s, orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”, “and let not your heart” or “and do not allow your, the people reading Solomon’s words’, soul, mind and will” “be hasty” which means “to exist as hurried, anxious and impetuous” “to utter any thing” or “to say, declare or proclaim one word or declaration” “before God” which means “in front and in the presence of the Supreme Deity”. Solomon instructed his readers not to be anxious with the orifice in their face used for speaking, and they were not to allow or permit their soul and mind to be hurried to say “any” words in the presence of the Supreme Deity Jehovah God.

The verse continues, “for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.” Solomon added the words, “for God” or “because, since and on account that the Supreme Deity Jehovah God” “is in heaven” which means “exists within the sky, abode of the stars and the sidereal heaven where God and other spiritual beings dwell”, “and you upon earth” or “and you, reader of Solomon’s words, in the country, territory, region district and world”: “therefore let your words” which means “wherefore, then and on this account allow and permit your, readers of Solomon’s, writings, utterances, declarations and proclamations” “be few” or “exist as small in number”. Solomon referred to how Jehovah God exists within the sidereal “heaven” and his readers dwell within the world, and for that reason, those who are in the world should allow their utterances to be small in number.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are not to speak in a quick fashion or to allow our souls and minds to rush to say words in the presence of the Supreme Deity Jehovah God. God exists within the “sidereal heaven”, and we reside within the world. For this reason we should not use a multitude of words within His presence. James the apostle wrote, “my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man works not the righteousness of God.” (See James 1:19-20) God wants to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will help us “tame our tongues” so we speak in ways that are pleasing to Him. (See James 3:2-12)

Next time Solomon says, “a dream comes through the multitude of business”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
