In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words”, and in chapter five and verse four of his book Solomon said, “when you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it”, where we read,
When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it;
for he has no pleasure in fools: pay that which you have vowed.
The verse reads, “When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it;” Solomon began with the words, “when you vow a vow” or “at the time and moment you, readers of Solomon’s words, commit to and make an oath or promise” “unto God” which means “to the Supreme Deity”, “defer not to pay it” or “do not delay, hesitate or tarry behind to complete, finish and make it good”. Solomon said at the time a person commits to a promise toward the Supreme Deity, they are not to delay or hesitate to make it good.
The verse continues, “for he has no pleasure in fools: pay that which you have vowed.” Solomon added the words, “for he has no pleasure” or “because, since and on account that he, the Supreme Deity, does not have longing, desire or delight” “in fools” which means “within people who are dullards, simpletons and stupid people”: “pay that which you have vowed” or “make peace, be finished, complete and finish whatever you, Solomon’s readers, have taken an oath and promised”. Solomon shared how the Supreme Deity Jehovah God does not have delight or desire within dullards and simpletons, so the people reading these words are to complete and finish whatever they have spoke in an oath and promised.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how anyone who makes a promise to the Supreme Deity is not to delay nor hesitate in fulfilling that which they have said. God does not delight in stupidity, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way when we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirt who will lead and guide us into making promises and keeping them in a manner that is pleasing to Him .
Next time Solomon shares about, “vowing and not paying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
