In the book of Judges we learned how Jephthah said to the king of Ammon, ”Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray you, through your land into my place. But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-one of Judges, we learn how, “the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel” where we read,
And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
The verse reads, “And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them:” The writer began with the words, “and the LORD God of Israel” which means “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God the Supreme Deity belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “delivered Sihon and all his people” or ”set, put, bestowed and committed Sihon whose name means ‘warrior’ and was king of the Amorites at the time of the conquest and defeated by Moses in Transjordan and each, every and the whole of the human beings who belonged to Sihon” “into the hand of Israel” which means “in the power, might and strength belonging to Israel whose name means ’God prevails’”, “and they smote them” or “and they, the people of Israel, beat, hit and killed them, Sihon and his people”. The writer shared how Jehovah God the Supreme Deity belonging to “Israel” granted that “Sihon” and every one of his human beings be given over to the power and might of “Israel”, and “Israel” beat and killed them.
The verse goes on to say, “so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.” The writer continued with the words, “so Israel” which means “therefore, then and on this account Israel whose name means ‘God prevails” “possessed all the land” or “seized, dispossessed and occupied each, the whole and every portion of the territory and region” “of the Amorites” which means “belonging to the Amorites whose name means ‘a sayer’ and was one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan, dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt”, “the inhabitants of that country” or “the abiders and dwellers within that land, territory and region”. The writer shared how “Jephthah” said “Israel” seized the Amorite territory and the people who dwelled there.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how “Jephthah” continued to tell the story of the people of “Israel’s” travels and journeys after they departed from “Egypt”, and he shared about “Israel’s” encounter with “Sihon” and his people who rose up and waged war against “Israel”. This caused “Israel” through Jehovah God to defeat “Sihon” and his people and to receive the territory and people of the “Amorites”. God’s desire is to have this type of personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and teach us to trust Him even when adversaries and foe rise up against us. (See John 3:16; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:37)
Next time we learn how Israel, “possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
