Messengers Sent to Sihon - Judges 11:19

In the book of Judges we learned how Jephthah said, ”Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon. But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh. Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray you, pass through your land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh. Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab”, and in chapter eleven and verse nineteen of Judges, we learn how, “Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon” where we read,

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon;

and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray you, through your land into my place.

The verse reads, “And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon;” The writer began with the words, “and Israel sent messengers” which means “and Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob, dispatched and assigned envoys and delegates” “unto Sihon king of the Amorites” or ”to Sihon whose name means ‘warrior’ the royal ruler and leader of the Amorites at the time of the conquest and defeated by Moses in Transjordan”, “the king of Heshbon” which means “the royal ruler belonging to Heshbon whose name means ‘stronghold’ and was the capital city of Sihon, king of the Amorites whose name means ‘a sayer’ and was one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan, dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt, located on the western border of the high plain and on the border line between the tribes of Reuben and Gad”. The writer shared how “Jephthah” continued to tell “king of Ammon” about the travels and journeys of the people of “Israel” after they left “Egypt”, and he included how they dispatched envoys to “Sihon” who was the royal ruler of the “Amorites” who ruled  from “Heshbon”.

The verse goes on to say, “and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray you, through your land into my place.” The writer continued with the words, “and Israel said unto him” which means “and Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob, uttered, declared and proclaimed to Sihon”, “let us pass” or “allow and permit us, the people of Israel, cross and march over and through”, “we pray you” which means “we, the people of Israel, beseech, ask and beg you, Sihon and Heshbon’s royal rulers”, “through your land” or “through your, Sihon’s region and territory” “into my place” which means “to my, Israel’s, station, post and region”. The writer shared how “Jephthah” told about “Israel” asking “Sihon” who was the royal leader of the “Amorites” who ruled from “Heshbon” to allow them to pass through his territory, and we shall see how he answers in our next verse.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Jephthah” continued to relay the message to the “king of Ammon” concerning the travels of the people of “Israel”, and he included when the people of “Israel” appealed to “Sihon” who was the royal ruler of the “Amorites” who ruled from “Heshbon” to allow them to travel through their territory to go to their own location. We shall see how “Sihon” responded in our next verses, but for now, let us continue to remember that Jehovah God was overseeing these words and events because He was purposed to deliver “Israel” from the aggression of “Ammon”. God watches over His people, and when we yield to His Son Jesus as our “Savior and Lord” who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and rose from the grave after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower to trust Him regardless who rises up against us. (See John 3:16; Isaiah 54:17)

Next time we learn how, “Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
