As Jeremiah poured out his
appeal to the Lord to consider the reproach, imaginations, lip
service and devices which his enemies conspired against him, he
deferred revenge to the Lord for their evil thoughts and deeds. In
chapter three and verse sixty three of Lamentations we see yet
another activity of ridicule employed by Jeremiah's enemies where we
read:
Behold their sitting
down, and their rising up; I am their music.
The
verse begins, “Behold their sitting down, and their
rising up;” Jeremiah beckoned
the Lord to “Behold” which
means to “look upon, show regard to, pay attention to, or consider”
these activities, “sitting down”
and “rising up”.
The idea was for God to consider their actions. Sometimes they would
sit, and other times they would rise up, but regardless of their
physical position, they were always against Jeremiah.
The verse goes on to say, “I
am their music.” This portion of the
verse gives insight to why Jeremiah desired that the Lord observe his
enemies' activity. No matter the posture of their bodies, they
ridiculed Jeremiah even in their songs. He became the topic of their
mocking lyrics, and whether they were sitting amongst one another or
rising to be about their day, Jeremiah's demise was their
entertaining chords.
Mockery and ridicule are not
unfamiliar activities to our Lord Jesus. In a manner of speaking, He
became the “music” for those who scorned and laughed at
Him while He was being tortured and crucified for the sins of the
world. Perhaps as we read Jeremiah's words we think ourselves the
“music” for others who have opposed us in our live. If so,
we know that Jesus can relate to our situation, and when these times
come, may we turn our hearts toward the one who provided the best way
to respond, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they
do.”
Next
time we see how Jeremiah asks the Lord to render them a recompense,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow...there is more...
