Vengeance and Imaginations Lamentations 3:60

As Jeremiah cried out to God from the low dungeon, he realized the Lord heard him and encouraged him to “fear not”. He appealed to the Lord to hear his cause and look upon the wrong perpetrated against him, and in chapter three and verse sixty of Lamentations we see Jeremiah once again referring to the evil done against him. We read:

You have seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me

The verse begins, “You have seen all their vengeance...” Jeremiah knows this principle found in the book of Proverbs in chapter fifteen and verse three:

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

He knows that God sees “all their vengeance” which means “revenge, slaughter and destruction”. Nothing that happened to Jeremiah and the people of Jerusalem and Judah were outside of the vision of Almighty God.

The verse goes on to add, “...and all their imaginations against me.” Jeremiah adds “imaginations” which are “thoughts, devices, plans and purposes” which his enemies construed against him. Not only were the actions of the enemies seen by God, but also all the thoughts associated with them were open to the Lord's view.

When we think about these words of Jeremiah we may wonder if God really sees our predicaments and whether He really cares about what others who oppose us conspire. Perhaps we need assurance that He does indeed see the vengeful deeds and imaginations of others, and there is “nothing hidden before His eyes”. Jeremiah knew the Lord was the one to whom he should appeal when wrong was executed against him, and as we learn from Jeremiah we should keep this principle in mind:

O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself.
Psalm 94:1

Next time we see the reproach of those against Jeremiah, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow...there is more...
