Jeremiah cried out from the
low dungeon, and the Lord heard his prayer. God instructed Jeremiah
to “fear not”, and the Lord let him know that He heard his
pleas and redeemed his life. In chapter three and verse fifty-nine of
Lamentations Jeremiah continues to speak toward the Lord concerning
the wrong he has endured. We read:
O LORD, you have seen
my wrong: you judge my cause.
The
verse begins, “O LORD, you have seen my wrong:”
Jeremiah first acknowledges the
Lord's observance of “my wrong”,
and at first glance we may think that Jeremiah has done something
amiss. The idea being conveyed is “O LORD, you have seen the wrong
that has been done to me.” In other words, Jeremiah plead to the
Lord concerning the bad that was done to him.
The verse goes on to say,
“you judge my cause.” Since
the Lord observed Jeremiah's mistreatment, Jeremiah defers judgment
to Almighty God. Rather than avenge himself, Jeremiah asked the Lord
to be his defense. As King David the Psalmist said in the book of
Psalms in chapter seven and verse ten:
Once
Jeremiah acknowledged that the Lord saw the wrong done to him, he
deferred judgment for that wrong to the Lord.
Paul the
apostle exhorted believers in the book of Romans in chapter twelve
and verse nineteen:
Dearly
beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto
wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay,
saith the Lord.
Jeremiah
knew this principle and put it into practice. As we meditate upon his
words perhaps we find ourselves in a position of being “wronged”.
We must remember that the Lord sees everything, and He knows when
others have treated us badly. In those times we may be tempted to
avenge ourselves, however let us take a lesson from Jeremiah and
David and allow the Lord to be our defense. May the Lord provide us
the grace to fulfill His Holy words.
Next
time we see how God saw Jeremiah's adversaries, so read ahead, and we
shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow...there is more...
