The Courageous Fleeing Amos 2:16

Amos the prophet continued to share how the “swift, the strong and the mighty” among the people of Israel would not be able to stand against the LORD's judgment, so he included those who “handled the bow”, were “swift of foot” and were “horse riders” among them. In chapter two and verse sixteen of his prophesy, Amos shared another truth about those who were “courageous” among them where we read:

And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, says the LORD.

The verse begins, “And he that is courageous among the mighty...” Amos began with the words, “and he that is courageous” which means “strong and mighty” “among the mighty” which refers to “the strong and brave men”. In addition to the warriors who “handle the bow, are swift of foot and chariot horse riders”, Amos addressed those who were consider the bravest and most mighty men among them.

The verse continues, “... shall flee away naked in that day, says the LORD.” Amos added, “shall flee away” or “escape, take flight, depart and disappear” “naked” which means “bare or nude either partially or totally” “in that day” or “time period”, “says” which means “utters, proclaims and declares” “the LORD” which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the one true God”. These “strong and mighty” warriors would “take flight and disappear” when the LORD brings “judgment” upon them.

When we think through these words of Amos, we see how even the “bravest” and “strongest” among the people of Israel would “flee” from the “judgment” of “the LORD”. Regardless of the resources we might have, there is no power greater than God's. Our only defense against His power and “punishment” is to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ His Son, and that may only accomplished by repenting of our sins, believing in His sacrificial death upon the cross and trusting that he was raised from the dead after three days. May all who think they stand, take heed, lest they face the awful “judgment” of Almighty God.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Amos write concerning the “word the LORD has spoken against” “Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
