Amos the
“herdsman” prophet of God continued to share the ways the
LORD cared for the people of “Israel”. For example, the
“Amorite” was “destroyed before” Israel even
though their strength was like unto the “cedars” and
“strong as the oaks”. In chapter two and verse ten of his
prophesy, Amos added how the LORD “brought” Israel “up
from Egypt” where we read:
Also I
brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years
through
the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
The
verse begins, “Also I brought you up from the land of
Egypt, and led you forty years
through the
wilderness,...” Amos began
with the words, “And I brought you up”
or “made to ascend, climb and go up” “from the land”
which means “country,
territory, region or district” “of Egypt”
which means “land of the Copts” and was “a country at the
northeaster section of Africa adjacent to Palestine and through which
the Nile flows”, “and led you”
or “carried and caused to walk” “forty years”
which means “forty divisions, measures and indications of time”
“through the wilderness” or
“pasture, uninhabited land and large tracts of desert”. The LORD
was with the people of Israel as they were exiled from “Egypt”
and “led” through
the “wilderness”
for “forty years” before
they entered the promise land.
The
verse goes on to say, “...to
possess the land of the Amorite.” Amos
continued, “to possess”
which means “seize, dispossess, take possession of, inherit, occupy
and be an heir” “the land”
or “country, territory, region or district” “of the
Amorite” which means “a
sayer” and was “one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the
Jordan which were dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from
Egypt”. The reason the LORD brought “Israel”
out of Egypt was to “seize” the “country of “Canaan”
and beyond and this included the
land of the “Amorites”.
When
we consider these words of Amos, we see how the LORD provided and
protected “Israel” when they left “Egypt” and
traveled through the desert “wilderness”. This should have
been another reminder to the people of “Israel” concerning
the LORD's providential care of them, and yet, they still forsook His
ways. This caused God's judgment to fall upon them, and when people
fail to realize the provision and protection the LORD has provided
through Jesus Christ His Son, they forsake their own mercy. While we
think on these things we should remember God's provision and
protection of us, and should we ever stray from His commandments and
ways, may He remind us of His great sacrifice and love for us.
Next
time we see
how God “destroyed
the Ammonite”
before Israel,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
