The people of
Israel forsook the LORD and His ways, and according to Amos the
prophet were under the judgment of God for their rebellion. Though
they went “out by
a thousand” they “shall leave an hundred”,
and that which went forth by
an hundred shall leave ten”. In chapter
five and verse four of his prophesy, Amos relayed the LORD's message
to them as He told them to “seek me, and you
shall live” where we read:
For thus
says the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek me, and you shall live:
The
verse begins, “For thus says the LORD unto the house of
Israel,...” Amos began with
the words, “For thus says”
or “utters, proclaims and declares” “the LORD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the
proper name for the one true God” “unto the house”
or “dwelling, habitation, place or shelter” “of
Israel” which means “God
prevails” and refers to “the name of the descendants and the
nation of the descendants of Jacob”. God addressed in particular
the people who dwelled within the country of Israel.
The
verse continues, “...Seek
me, and you shall live:” Amos
added, “Seek me”
which means “resort to, enquire and require of the LORD”, “and
you shall live” or “Israel
shall have life, remain alive and live prosperously”. The benefit
to the people of Israel “enquiring of and seeking the LORD” was
they would “prosper” and continue in life.
When
we meditate upon these words of Amos, we can almost hear the LORD
beckoning the people of Israel to a. Their benefit would be to
“live”. They would “remain alive and live prosperously” as
they searched for Him and made Him the desire of their hearts. God
Almighty sent Jesus Christ His Son into the world to demonstrate how
much He desires for people to “seek” for Him. Jesus said,
“Seek, and you shall find”, and when we desire a relationship
with the LORD, He is quick to promise we shall experience “life,
and life more abundantly”.
Next
time Amos shares about
“Gilgal
and Bethel”
again,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
