As Amos the prophet
continued to share the judgments that were to come upon the people of
Israel, he referred to the way God destroyed “Sodom and
Gomorrah” as an example of His withdrawing them like a
“firebrand plucked out of the burning”. Though many judgments
came upon Israel, the people did not “return to” the LORD,
and in chapter four and verse thirteen of his prophesy, Amos referred
to “The LORD” who “forms the mountains, and creates
the wind” where we read:
For, lo, he that forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and
declares unto man what is his thought, that makes the
morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earth, The
LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
The
verse begins, “For, lo, he that forms the mountains, and
creates the wind, and declares unto man what is his
thought,...” Amos began with
the word, “For”
which means “because, since and on account of” “lo,
he that forms” or “fashions,
frames, per-ordains and predetermines” “the mountains”
which refers to “the hill country or range of mountains”, “and
creates” or “shapes, forms
and transforms” “the wind”
which means “the breath of air”, “and declares”
or “tells, announces, reports, expounds and makes known” “unto
man” which refers to “mankind
or human beings”, “what is his thought” or
“meditative communion”. Almighty creative God is able to “form
mounting, create the winds”
and “declare His thoughts”
to people.
The
verse continues, “...that
makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the
earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.”
Amos added, “that
makes” or “fashions,
accomplishes and produces” “the morning darkness”
which refers to “the dawn's obscurity”, “and treads”
or “bends, leads and marches”
“upon the high places” which
means “the ridges, cultic platforms, mountains and high places of
worship” “of the earth”
or “the land, country, territory and region”, “The
LORD” which refers to “Yehovah
or Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the one
true God”, “The God”
or “the divine ruler and judge” “of hosts”
which refers to “the army, warfare and mass of angels”,
“is his name” or
“reputation, fame and glory”. The LORD of hosts controls the dark
before dawn and is able to leads a march through the high places of
the earth.
When
we think through these words of Amos, we are reminded of the power
and resources of our “Creator God”. Israel forsook Him, and
though He “formed the mountains, creates the wind,
declares His thought unto men, makes the morning darkness and treads
upon the high places”, they
did not return to Him. Even as the LORD sent His Son Jesus Christ
into the world to save each person from condemnation, there continues
to be those who reject Him and refuse to repent. We should highly
regard the power of our Creative God and turn back to Him before we
discover His Almighty power against us.
Next
time we
begin a new chapter and see Amos “take
up a lamentation”
against “the
house of Israel”,
so
read ahead, and we shall join together then.
