The beloved physician Luke wrote how Claudius Lysias, “wrote a letter after this manner” concerning Paul the apostle, “Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting. This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman. And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council. Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to you, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before you what they had against him. Farewell. Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-two of the book of Acts Luke shared, “on the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him” where we read:
On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:
The verse begins, “On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, ...” Luke began with the word, “on the morrow” which means “and upon the following day” “they left the horsemen” or “the soldiers separated themselves apart from the equestrian members of the cavalry” “to go with him” which means “to proceed forward and alongside Paul”. Luke shared how the next day the “soldiers” departed from the “members of the equestrian cavalry” who continued on with “Paul”.
The verse continues, “... and returned to the castle:” Luke added the words, “and returned” which means “and the soldiers went back” “to the castle” or “toward the barracks of the Roman soldiers which was at Jerusalem within the castle of Antonia”. Luke shared how the “soldiers” who were guarding “Paul” went back to their barracks at the“castle” in Jerusalem after they reached the city of “Antipatris”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “soldiers” had fulfilled their mission at this point as they accompanied “Paul”. They left “Paul” with the “equestrian military” when they reached the “city of Anitpatris” and they went back to their “barracks” located in the “castle” in Jerusalem. God's plan for the salvation of mankind was continuing, and He used these “soldiers” and the equestrian military to guard “Paul” so His gospel could be further spread. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of mankind. When they yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Those who carefully study the step by step efforts of God for His good news to continue should surrender themselves to Jesus who is ready to receive all who come to Him.
Next time Luke shares how the equestrian military, “delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before” Felix, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
