Joshua Standing Before the Lord's Angel - Zechariah 3:1

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation, and in chapter three and verse one of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD” where we read,

And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD,

and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

The verse reads, And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, ... Zechariah began with the words, “and he showed me” or “and he, the angel, caused me, Zechariah, to consider, inspect and perceive” “Joshua the high priest” which means “Joshua whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and was the chief, important, noble and elder principal officer or chief ruler” “standing before the angel” or “tarrying, remaining and continuing in front and in the presence of the spiritual envoy and messenger” “of the LORD” which means “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Zechariah shared how the angel who spoke to him caused him to observe “Joshua”, the chief “priest” who returned to Jerusalem with the people of Israel, remaining in front of the spiritual angel of Jehovah God.

The verse continues, “... and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. Zechariah added the words, “and Satan” or “and the adversary, one who withstands and the arch-enemy of good” “standing at his right hand” which means “remaining, enduring and continuing at the right hand of power and might of the angel” “to resist him” or “to oppose, attack and act as an adversary against him, Joshua the high priest”. Zechariah shared how the “Adversary Satan” remained at the right hand side of power of the “angel” to oppose “Joshua the high priest”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how the “angel” who spoke to him revealed another spiritual scene to him in this vision. This time Zechariah saw the “chief priest Joshua” in front of the messenger of Jehovah God, and the “Adversary Satan” was beside the “angel's” right hand of power and might to oppose “Joshua”. This is a glimpse into spiritual warfare, and even as “Satan” contended with “Joshua” the high priest, “Satan” opposes us as well. God wants to save us from our sins, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and come to our aid whenever our “adversary Satan” rises against us. (See Ephesians 4:27; 6:11; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8)

Next time Zechariah shares how Jehovah God says, “the LORD rebuke you, O Satan”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
