Nahum the
prophet continued to share about the devastation that was destined
for the city of Nineveh and it's people. God was to “cast
abominable filth upon” them, “make” them “vile”
and “set” them “as a gazingstock” before
other nations. In chapter three and verse seven of his prophesy,
Nahum shared how everyone who would “look upon” Nineveh
would “flee from” them, and no one would be able to
“bemoan” or “comfort” them. We read:
And it
shall come to pass, that
all they that look upon you shall flee from you, and say,
Nineveh is
laid waste: who will bemoan her? where shall I seek comforters for
you?
The
verse begins, “And it shall come to
pass, that
all they that look upon you shall flee from you,...” Nahum
began with the words, “And it shall
come to pass that all they that look” which
is all one Hebrew word “ra'ah” and means “”see, look at,
inspect, perceive and consider” “upon
you” which
refers to “the city of Nineveh” “shall
flee from you”
or “retreat, depart, move, wander abroad, stray and flutter”.
Anyone who “looks upon”
the devastation in Nineveh would “move and flutter away from them”.
The
verse goes on to say, “...
and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? where shall I
seek comforters for you?” Nahum
continued, “and say” or
“utter, speak, answer and boast proudly”, “Nineveh”
whose name means “abode of Ninus” and was “capital of the
ancient kingdom of Assyria; located on the east bank of the Tigris
river, 550 miles (880 km) from its mouth and 250 miles (400 km) north
of Babylon” “is laid waste”
or “despoiled, devastated, ruined, destroyed and spoiled”: “who
will bemoan her?” which means
“shake, waver, wander, move to and fro, flutter, show grief and
have compassion on the city of Nineveh” “where shall I
seek” or “where would Nahum
require, exact and request” “comforters”
which means “those who will be sorry for, console, repent and be
regretful” “for you”
which refers to “the city of Nineveh”. When Nineveh was
destroyed, no one “grieved” for them, and there were none to feel
sorry for them.
When
we think through these words of Nahum, we see how others will look
upon the destruction of Nineveh and run from them. The city would be
“spoiled and ruined” and there would be no one who would have
“compassion” upon or “be sorry” for them. This is the fate
for those who reject Jesus Christ as their Savior and LORD. Jesus
desires for everyone to “come unto” Him, but should they
refuse His offer of salvation, there will be no comforters or
grieving ones to consul them in their demise.
Next
time Nahum shares concerning “Ethiopia,
Egypt,Put and Lubim”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
