Whoredoms and Witchcrafts Nahum 3:4

Nahum continued to share about the destruction of Nineveh, he shared how “the whip, the horsemen with bright swords and glittering spear” would slay “a great number of carcasses” in the city of Nineveh so there would be “no end” of them, and they would “stumble upon their corpses”. In chapter three and verse four of his letter, Nahum describes the “multitude of whoredoms, the well-favored harlot and mistress of witchcrafts” where we read:

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

The verse begins with the words, “Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts,.” Nahum began with the word, “Because of the multitude” or “abundant, great and numerous” “of the whoredoms” which means “adultery, fornication and prostitution” “of the well-favored” or “good, pleasant, agreeable, excellent and valuable with grace, charming, elegant and acceptable” “harlot” which means “committer of fornication, adultery and prostitution” “the mistress” or “female owner, sorceress or necromancer” “of witchcrafts” which means “sorceries, incantations and magic”. Another reason for the destruction of the city of Nineveh was the “abundance” of the “fornication, adultery and prostitution” that was among them.

The verse continues, “that sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.” Nahum added, “that sells” or “merchandises and surrenders” “nations” which refers to “peoples, troops and heathen people” “through her whoredoms” or “fornication, adultery and prostitution”, “and families” which means “clans, tribes, peoples and nations” “through her witchcrafts” or “sorceries, incantations and magic”. Nahum shared how the city of Nineveh was able to “merchandise” peoples and “nations” with their means of “fornication, adultery and prostitution”.

When we meditate upon these words of Nahum, we discover the reason Nineveh was to be judged by the LORD. They were filled with “fornication, adultery and prostitution”, and they used these as well as “sorceries and incantations” to convince other “nations” to follow their pernicious ways. When these manifestations of ungodliness permeate a society, they have turned from the ways of God and rejected His offer of Jesus Christ to remove their sins. The LORD wants every person to accept Jesus as their Savior and LORD and turn from their wicked ways, and if there is a “multitude” of “whoredoms, harlots and witchcrafts” within us, let us forsake them before and turn to the LORD Jesus.

Next time Nahum shares again how “the LORD is against” Nineveh, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
