The Spoil of Silver and Gold Nahum 2:9

Nahum the prophet prophesied the LORD's destruction that was destined for the city of Nineveh. Even though Nineveh was like a “pool of water” or refreshment and relaxation, they would leave their respite and not “look back” as they cried when destroyed. In chapter two and verse nine of his prophesy, Nahum exhorted, “take the spoil of silver” and “gold” where we read:

Take the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold:
for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

The verse begins, “Take the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold:” Nahum began with the words, “Take the spoil” or “plunder, seize and take away” “of silver” which refers to “money, shekels or talents”, “take the spoil” which means “plunder, seize and take away” “of gold” or “precious metal, brilliance and splendor”. When the enemy invades Nineveh, the “gold and silver” will be easy to “plunder and seize”.

The verse goes on to say, “for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.” Nahum added, “for there is none end” which means “no extremity, border, outskirt and utmost part” “of the store” or “arrangement, preparation, disposition or fixed place” “and glory” which means “honor, abundance, splendor, dignity and reputation” “out of all the pleasant” which means “desirable, precious, beloved and goodly” “furniture” or “articles, vessels, implement, utensils, apparatus and vessels”.

When we meditate upon these words of Nahum, we see how the precious metals and “desirable articles” were open prey for the conquerors of Nineveh. Though they enjoyed their riches at one time, the people of Nineveh were “spoiled” by their enemies. We must keep this in mind as we “enjoy” and depend upon our “precious” things and should we forsake the most valuable relationship, the one with Jesus Christ as our Savior, we too will find nothing that is not vulnerable and open to our enemy.

Next time Nahum writes how Nineveh is “empty, and void, and waste”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
