As Nahum the
prophet described the destruction that would come upon the city of
Nineveh, he said “she is empty, and void, and waste”, and
this would make the people's “heart melt”, “knees smite
together”, have “pain in all loins” and have “faces
of them all gather blackness”. In chapter two and verse eleven
of his prophesy Nahum shared about the “dwelling and the
feeding-places” of lions where we read:
The
verse begins, “Where is
the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding-place of the young
lions,...” Nahum
began with the words, “Where is the
dwelling”
or “habitation, refuge and refuge” “of
the lions”
which refers to “lions who would pluck or tear abroad”, “and
the feeding-place”
or “pasture and haunt of wild animals” “of
the young lions”
which refers to “the villages of lions which are already weaned and
having begun to ravin and devour”. Nahum knew the devastation to
the city of Nineveh would be so thorough not even the places where
the strongest among them, “the lions
and the young lions”
would be able to stand against it.
The verse goes on to
say, “...where the lion, even
the old lion, walked, and
the lion's whelp, and none made them
afraid?” Nahum
added, “where the lion” which
refers to “habitation, refuge and refuge”, “even
the old lion”
or “the roaring, fierce, old and stout”, “walked”
which means “departed, proceeded, moved away and lived” “and
the lion's whelp”
which refers to “cub or young one”, “and
none made them afraid”
which means “to tremble, quake, move about, be startled and
terrified”. Even the most agile and strong and the mature and
fearsome would be null in their ability to strike fear in the enemy.
When
we consider these words of Nahum, we discover how the greatest
among the people of Nineveh would not be able to resist the
devastation pronounced upon them. Though they have characteristics
that usually fend off adversaries, none of them would be effective
against their enemy. When the LORD makes up His mind to bring
destruction, nothing can withstand Him, and those who reject His Son
Jesus as Savior and LORD will know the same resoluteness He
determined upon Nineveh. May all who think themselves to be “lions,
young lions, old lions and lion's whelps” take heed to the
awesome resolve of God.
Next
time Nahum writes about “the
dwelling of the lions”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
