In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said of the person in misery concerning the future, “he knows not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?”, and in chapter eight and verse eight of his book Solomon said, “there is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit” where we read,
There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
The verse reads, “There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death:” Solomon began with the words, “there is no man” or “there exists no person whether male or female” “that has power over the spirit” which means “who has mastery, dominance and potency on top and above the breath, mind, wind and disposition” “to retain the spirit” or “to restrict, restrain, withhold or forbid the breath, mind, wind and disposition”; “neither has he power” which means “no and not in any way does he, the person, have might, strength, mastery or potency” “in the day of death” or “within the time period or season pertaining to ruin, destruction, pestilence and dying”. Solomon said nobody possesses might and mastery to restrain the soul and mind from departing nor do they possess the ability prevent the time of their death.
The verse goes on to say, “and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.” Solomon continued with the words, “and there is no discharge” or “and there exists not any dismissal, deputation or sending away” “in that war” which means “within the battle or fight to the obligation of death”; “neither shall wickedness” or “no and not in any manner will wrong, guilt or iniquity” “deliver those that are given to it” which means “rescue and save the people who are owners, lords, citizens and inhabitants of evil and are sinful”. Solomon said there exists no dismissal within the battle of death, and the people who are evil and filled with iniquity will not be saved by their sinful ways.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how no one has mastery over their soul and mind to keep them from departing this life through death, and no one dismisses that battle because even those who are sinful be unable to escape death by their “wicked” ways. God knows us, and He loves us. He wants us to live with Him forever, and when we put our faith and trust in His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and prepare us for our death and subsequent judgment before Him some day. (John 16:13; Romans 14:10)
Next time Solomon says, “All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
