In the book of Joshua, speaking of the children of Israel who departed from Egypt we learned, “all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised”, and in chapter five and verse six of the book of Joshua, we learn how Joshua or the author referred to how, “the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness”, where we read,
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
The verse reads, “For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “for the children of Israel” which means “because, since and on account that the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the proper name of the One True God” “walked forty years” or “departed, proceeded, moved and traversed for forty annual sets of days” “in the wilderness” which means “within the uninhabited desert place”, “till all the people” or “until each, every, the whole and everyone of the male human beings” “that were men of war” which means “who existed as male human beings pertaining to battle and fighting”, “which came out of Egypt” or “who left and departed from Egypt whose name means land of the Copts and is a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows”, “were consumed” or “existed as complete, finished and at an end”, “because they obeyed not” which means “since and on account that they, the people of Israel, did not hear, listen to, perceive or pay attention to” “the voice of the LORD” or “the noise and sound of uttered words from Jehovah who is the existing One and is the proper name for the One True God”. Joshua or the writer referred to how the offspring belonging to “Israel” made their way through the uninhabited desert place until all the male human beings trained for battle who departed from “Egypt” were devoured on account that they did not hearken to Jehovah God’s words.
The verse goes on to say, “unto whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.” Joshua continued with the words, “unto whom the LORD” or “to whom Jehovah who is the existing One and is the proper name for the One True God” “swore that he would not show them” which means “adjured and took an oath that he, Jehovah God, would in no way or manner allow or permit them, the people of Israel who departed from Egypt, to inspect, perceive or observe” “the land” or “the region, territory and country”, “which the LORD” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and is the proper name for the One True God”, “swore unto their fathers” or “adjured and took an oath toward their, the people of Israel’s, immediate male ancestors and progenitors” “that he would give us” which means “that he, Jehovah God, was to grant, bestow and assign to us, Joshua and the people of Israel”, “a land that flows” or “a region, territory and country that gushes, issues and discharges forth” “with milk and honey” which means “accompanied by rich milk from a kine and sticky honey or honeycomb.” Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God took an oath that He would in no way allow the people of Israel who left “Egypt” to observe the territory that gushes with “rich milk” and sweet honeycomb.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Joshua or the writer referred to the “forty years” that the people of Israel “wandered” through the uninhabited desert with all the males who left “Egypt” already being “circumcised”, however, they did not continue that sacred rite upon those who were birthed in the “wilderness”. Those who left “Egypt”, other than Joshua and Caleb, were not allowed to observe or enter into the promise land because they did not hearken unto God’s declarations. God wants obedience, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way for us through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and teach us the value of paying attention to and obeying the directives of Almighty God.
Next time Joshua or the author says, “their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
