In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. And he spoke unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-two of the book of Joshua, we learn how Joshua instructed the people of Israel to, “let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land” where we read,
Then you shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
The verse reads, “Then you shall let your children know, saying, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “then you shall let your children know” which means “at that time you, the people of Israel, are to allow and permit your, the people of Israel’s, offspring and progeny to perceive, see, find out, discern and distinguish”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Joshua told the people of Israel were to allow their offspring to discern and perceive what the “twelve stones” meant by declaring the following.
The verse goes on to say, “… Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.” Joshua continued with the words, “Israel came over this Jordan” or “Israel, whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “on dry land” which means “upon arid ground”. Joshua told the people of Israel that they should tell their offspring how the people of “Israel” crossed the river “Jordan” upon arid ground.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover how Joshua instructed the people of “Israel” to allow their offspring to perceive that Jehovah God caused the people of “Israel” to cross the river “Jordan” on arid ground. God worked on behalf of the people of Israel, and their “children” were to know about His miracle. God has worked on our behalf as well when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and help us to share with future generations the wonderful miracle of salvation God has performed on us.
Next time we learn how Joshua says, “the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
