Nahum shared
the judgment of God that was to come upon the city of Nineveh, and he
likened them to “folded thorns, drunken drunkards and stubble”
that would be easily “devoured”. In chapter one and verse eleven
of his prophesy, Nahum referred to one whom he considered “a
wicked counselor” where we read:
There is
one come out of you,
that imagines evil against the LORD, a wicked counselor.
The
verse begins, “There is one
come out of you, that imagines evil against the LORD,...” Nahum
began with the phrase, “There is one come
out” or “a person who exits, goes forth,
departs and proceeds” “of you”
which refers to “a person in Nineveh”, “that
imagines” or “counts, thinks, devises,
reckons, purposes, esteems, imputes and regards” “evil”
which means “wickedness, mischief, hurt, bad, trouble, affliction,
adversity and harm” “against” or
“in opposition to, resistance, ” “the
LORD” which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah
who is the existing One and the proper name for the one true God”.
Nahum wrote of a person who thought he could actually do “evil”
and “harm” “in resistance” God Almighty.
The
verse goes on to say, “... a wicked counselor.” Nahum
continued, “a wicked” or “worthless, good for nothing,
unprofitable and base” “counselor” which refers to
“advisor, deviser, planner, consult and deliberator”. Nahum
concluded this thoughts with an appraisal of this “evil”
person – they were “worthless and unprofitable” in their plans
and advice.
When
we think through these words of Nahum, we consider the foolishness of
this one person or any person who thinks they might do “evil”
and “harm” to God Almighty. Sometimes people get the idea that
they can damage God in some manner, but they only injure themselves
and others. The LORD Jesus is superior in power, might, mercy and
grace to all other beings, and no one should even dare to “imagine”
as an “evil counselor” to even bring forth foolish
devises. May the LORD Jesus through His Holy Spirit help us to
recognize His awesome power, and may we never be like this “evil”
thinking “wicked counselor”.
Next
time we see Nahum ask “what
do you imagine against the LORD?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
