Nahum the
prophet proclaimed the LORD's “anger” and “indignation”
against the rebellious city of Nineveh, and when the LORD brings
judgment not only are the people affected by it, but also “the
mountains, hills, earth and world” are subject to it as well.
In chapter one and verse seven of his prophesy, Nahum proclaims how
the LORD is “good” and “a stronghold in the day of
trouble” where we read:
The verse begins, “The LORD is
good, a strong hold in the day of trouble;” Nahum
began with the words, “The LORD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing One and the
proper name for the one true God” “is
good” or “pleasant, agreeable, rich,
excellent and valuable”, “a strong hold”
which means “place of safety, fastness,
refuge and protection” “in the day”
or “period or division of time” “of
trouble” which means “straits, distress,
vexation and rival”. Nahum's declaration is that Jehovah is “of
great worth and valuable” whenever times of “distress and
vexation” come.
The
verse goes on to say, “and he knows them that trust in him.”
Nahum continued, “and he knows” which means
“perceives, discerns, discriminates, distinguishes and recognizes”
“them that trust” or “seek refuge in, flee for
protection, confide and hope” “in him” which refers to
“the LORD”. When the “times of trouble” enter, God Almighty
“perceives and recognizes” those who have put their faith in,
trust in and reliance upon Him.
When
we consider these words of Nahum, we see this as a light in the midst
of great proclamation of judgment. Although the LORD is “angry,
furious and filled with indignation” against His foes, Nahum
recognizes the LORD's basic nature as “good” and
“protective” toward those who put their trust in Him. Jesus
Christ offers His goodness and Salvation well before His judgment,
and those who are wise will put “their trust in him”.
Next
time we see Nahum share about God's “overrunning
flood”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
