As Nahum the
prophet continued to share how God would “take
vengeance on his adversaries”, he declared
how the LORD's “anger”
and “great power would not acquit the
wicked”. Nahum shared how “the
LORD has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds
are
the dust of his feet” and how He would
“rebuke the sea” and
make it “dry” or
“withered and without moisture”. In chapter one and verse five of
his prophesy, Nahum told how the LORD's “presence”
also affects “the
mountains, the hills and the earth” where
we read:
The
mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned
at his presence,
yes, the
world, and all that dwell therein.
The
verse begins, “The mountains quake at him, and the hills
melt, and the earth is burned at his presence,...” Nahum
began with the words, “The mountains”
or “hill country or range of hills” “quake”
which means “shake or cause to spring or leap” “at
him” which refers to the LORD,
“and the hills” or
“little hills which were used as a place of illicit worship”
“melt” which means “faint,
soften, dissolve and dissipate”, “and the earth”
or “land, country, territory, district and region” “is
burned” which means “born
up, taken, carried away, lifted up, sustained, endured and swept
away” “at his presence”
which refers to “the LORD's face, front and forefront”. When the
LORD's “presence”
or “countenance” shines even the earth, mountains and hills
tremble and dissolve.
The
verse goes on to say, “...yes, the world, and all that
dwell therein.” Nahum added,
“yes, the world”
or “the earth, globe and it's inhabitants”, “and all
that dwell therein” which
means “everyone who dwells within, sits down, remains, stays and
abides in it”. Not only do the “mountains, hills and
earth” “tremble and quake”
at the “presence of the LORD”,
but so does the entire “world”
and everyone who dwells within it.
When
we consider these words of Nahum, we cannot imagine the awesomeness
of the LORD's presence and the affect it has upon the world and it's
inhabitants. When the LORD showed Himself strong against His
adversaries and foes, none could stand before Him and everyone who
opposed Him quaked and trembled at His face. Jesus Christ came into
the world as “Savior and LORD”, and those who follow Him will not
fear His “presence”, but woe be to those who take their
stand against Him for they shall know “the terror of the
presence of the LORD” which are known even by the “mountains,
hills and earth”.
Next
time we see Nahum ask “who
can stand before his indignation”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
