As
Nahum continued the LORD's proclamation of judgment against the city
of Nineveh, he shared that although “the
LORD is
good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that
trust in him”,
He would “with an overrunning
flood...make an utter end of the place thereof”.
He also declared that “darkness shall
pursue his enemies”.
In chapter one and verse nine of his prophesy, Nahum again refers to
the “utter end”
and this time“with affliction”
where we read:
What do ye
imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end:
affliction
shall not rise up the second time.
The
verse begins, “What do you imagine against the LORD? He
will make an utter end” Nahum
began with the words, “What do you imagine”
which refers to “the people in Nineveh thinking, planning,
calculation, inventing, making a judgment or counting”
“against” or “contrary or
in opposition to” “the LORD”
or “Yehovah of Jehovah who is the existing One and the one true
God?” “He will make”
which means “fashion, do, accomplish and produce” “an
utter end” or “completion,
termination, complete destruction, consumption and annihilation”.
It was futile for the people of Nineveh to “imagine”
any way to resist the LORD's power, because He was able to cause
“complete destruction” upon them.
The
verse goes on to say, “affliction shall not rise up the
second time.” Nahum continued
with the word, “affliction” which
refers to “straits, distress, trouble, vexation and rival” “shall
not rise up” which means
“stand, arise, become powerful, established and on the scene”
“the second time” or
“stroke, beat, foot, anvil and occurrence again”. Because the
LORD's devastation would be so far reaching, the city of Nineveh
would never rise to it's former level again.
When
we consider these words of Nahum, we see the intimidation caused by
the LORD. No one could ever think of any way to come against Him once
He has determined and proclaimed judgment upon them. In other words,
there are none who can prevail. Jesus Christ offers escape from the
judgment of God by accepting His sacrifice for sins upon the cross,
and those who “trust in, rely upon and cling to” Him will not
face His judgment. However, those who reject Jesus will not only face
His fierce wrath and “utter” destruction, but they will never
think of any other way to avoid it.
Next
time we see Nahum shares about “drunkards,
thorns and stubble”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
